I'm curious to find out if anyone else feels that co-ed football (without any protective gear) is inappropriate for 3rd grade PE? My daughter is always outdoors and has always gotten the Presidential Physical Fitness award and now can't stand PE. Since when does "physical education" = sports?? And, why can't the sport be more universal? I'm wondering if I should mention this to the school principal. Thoughts please!

I teach elementary PE and we do flag football.
I allow girls to play if they want to. Many want to give it a try. The caveat is I also teach a modified volleyball the same time so the girls have an alternative. It is called boundball and it all volleyball with a bounce between hits. Flag football is non contact so I see no problem with it being coed. I have girls that were outstanding. Talk to her PE teacher.

They actually play touch football - which I'm not fond. You never really know what will get touched and a touch can easily turn into a shove when you're running. There is no alternative for them to participate in - one coach for 2 classrooms of kids (3rd and 4th grade).

I sent an e-mail to the coach (no response yet). Since football is a male dominated sport, I'm wondering if there will be a female dominated sport (such as aerobics/dance) in the cirriculum. Seems to me that the sports picked should be more universal.

Touch football with 3rd and 4th graders is really nothing more than a game of tag. In elementary school, the 'coach' should be going over the skills that are involved in the game of football more so than the game itself. As a young, athletic, female phys ed teacher I always help young girls to be successful at 'male dominated' sports. It is a great opportunity for confidence that will last a lifetime.

There is no need to play touch football.
Its leaves too much room for debate and
pushing hard. Just take an old sheet and
cut strips of about 2"wide by 16" long.
stuff two in the back pockets or even in the
waist band. THey make good flags.
