I am looking for some great activities for a large group (about 40-50 students) with mixed ages K-3. This is an after school program that uses my gym for about 20 minutes - the chaos needs to end!! We need something safe yet keeps the kids active. Any ideas would be great.

What I love to do with such a large group is any dance activity. Kids love to dance. There is a great song by DJ Casper called Slide. You can download it off http://www.limewire.com. I have tried this song with students ranging from grades k-5 and they all loved it. It takes about 5-6 minutes to complete. The song encompasses locomotor movements (jumping, hopping, sliding, etc) and it encourages student listening because the DJ calls out the steps to perform.
After the warm up set up a few stations that the students can rotate to. Place about 8-10 students at each station. For example have skipping ropes at one station, have an obstacle course at one station, have skill development at another, and perhaps a parachute if you have one.

A great site to check out ideas for large numbers of students is http://www.pecentral.com

A great game that I play with a large class of any age is called Wall Ball. (You can call it whatever you want to). The game is very simple and easy to set and explain. There are two teams. Each team has their own side of the gym/all purpose room. The object of the game is to practice the skills of kicking, throwing, and catching the balls. The balls I use are the small soft gator skin balls. With my older kids I keep score of the game. They score points by throwing or kicking the ball and hitting the wall, or by catching the ball in the air. I also sometimes incorporate dancing points, teamwork points, and points for shooting the ball into one of the basketball hoops. The game can be designed for your kid's needs and abilities, and all of my students enjoy it.

Upside Right, a Children's Guide to Movement is a beginning reading book, in verse, for the young reader that contains all the basic movement concepts. The book is great for a school library. You can use the information in the book to plan movement lessons around the themes. A new and different approach to lesson planning in this area. Lesson plans soon to follow. For further info, visit www.pehealthsite.com.

I am looking for PE ideas for lager classes of about 60 students for 5th and 6th grades. I do not have a gym to go. I teach in california and would love ideas on games and sports that are unfamiliar to warmer climates, lacrosse has been a big interest but I struggle with ways to make it safe since we do not have the funds for helmet gear. Any ideas would be appreciated

Cha Cha Slide or Casper Slide is great BUT beware of Limewire...It says free since it is out of Europe but it can really screw up your computer. ITunes are only $.99 and you can burn them to a CD. Just make sure you have a newer CD player that will play MP3's.

I like that Sarah uses dance as a group activity. I use the macarena and electric slide with my class. Other than dance, you could also do yoga with your classes as well as pantomiming activities, red light green light, and relay games.

Check out www.LEPEinc.com and look at Clean Up Your Backyard. This book comes with lesson plans for throwing and throwing for accuracy. The book tells a whimsical story about two families that need to clean up their backyard. You read the story and then the children play the game as though they are the families. For equipment you need some soft nerf like balls and a volleyball net or some kind of room divider.
