I'm having the worst time with students not wearing tennis shoes. I have sent notes and reminders home but it keeps happening with the same kids. I don't like sitting kids out but when they have the wrong shoes on I have to. Any suggestions?

I've had a hard time with this also. Recently, I've given a boring activity to those without gym shoes. Most of the time, after being separated from their friends and being bored (yet active), they remember their shoes. I do have two 6th grade girls, however, that aren't as motivated by this. I'm re-thinking it for them.

As for the activity, I have them walk the stairs in the gym. They have to walk the entire time, with the exception of a water break half way through. I'm on the lookout for other activities that fit the bill, too.

I teach elementary and I think this is a problem for everyone everywhere asI always have a handful that "forget" they had PE that day. I also do the reminders home or an email to parents to help. I started just having them wear their shoes and if the girls have on heels they have to be more careful and not run. Normally only takes a couple of times for them to remember.

I'd really like to find a study done some where on the importance of tying shoes and the proper development of students muscles. I hate the untied shoes and the giant skater like shoes!

Christie,
My suggestion would be to start to acquire used or hand-me-down shoes. If you can acquire used shoes somewhere, then those kids who always forget their tennis shoes won't have that as an excuse anymore. Of course some parents may question the cleanliness of the shoes but of course they would be cleaned after every use so it should be fine and the students would only have to wear them for as long as the class period. After the class is over, the students must return them to you.
