I was wondering if anybody assigned homework in their P.E. classes and if so what type of things are being assigned? |

I have a Winter Olympics unit that I do with my classes each year. The students love it and I take this opportunity to give them a small homework assignment. I have my fourth graders choose one of the events that we are participating in (Bobsled, Curling, Luge, Speed Skating, Skiing, Hockey, and the Biathalon - all adapted for in a gym of course!) and they must find a picture of it (or draw one), and find at least 5 facts about that sport that they did not know before. I then post these around the gym and it gives the younger students a chance to learn about the sports as well. The kids seem to love it! I do not give regular homework, but this assignment seems meaningful and is always well done! |

Quite often I tell them to drop down and do 20 curlups and 10 situps for every TV show they watch. I tell them it just takes a minute or two. |

When I was teaching Elementary PE, I would give occasional assignments. One in particular that was assigned was during our football unit, the students had to watch part of a football game and mention in front of a parent or another adult that "the quarterback uses a 5 or 7 step drop back" or the receiver ran a square in pattern, or something of that sort...an they had to write the reaction of that person to their comment. Another type of homework had to do with an activity calendar with bonus days when the parent or another adult did the activity with them. They got a sticker for completing the calendar. Some assignments had to do with writing to our Travel Buddy where ever the buddy was located. We had a stuffed rabbit named Felix who happened to have a series of books that were perfect for our project. I had some assignments regarding nutrition. Elementary school is pretty easy to come up with creative ideas for homework. I tried to make the assignments relatively simple that would help them understand a concept and not be labor intensive. I always tried to get them to involve a parent/adult in the assignment so we were "educating" the parent as well. |

My 6th grade class has to turn in their PE weekly calendar every Friday--there is a drop box outside my room and they just drop it off as they pass. It is considered homework, but it only takes a few minutes each week and they earn 10 points for it. They just record their daily activity, if it was moderate or high intensity, and how long they participated. |
