My 7 year old son wanted to be a team captain for field day. The PE teacher does the following to pick team captains: has the kids stand if they want to be a captain then goes kid by kid and has the class vote for them. When it was my sons turn, he received NO votes. He was humiliated and sad. The kid with the most votes wins. Each kid can see exactly who voted for them and can see if they receive no votes.

There has got to be a better way! My son does not deserve to be embarrassed in front of the class. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Tell the PE teacher that is about the same as letting them pick teams and getting to see who is picked last. They should vote secret ballot so only he/she knows the results. Tell him a 28 year vet of PE suggested it. And who needs captians for Field Day?

This is not an acceptable physical education practice. There are many ways to choose team captains, but voting in front of the class is not one of them. If the PE teacher needed team captains for field day, it sounds like it is a competitive event. That has gone by the wayside with contemporary quality physical education. I think that some competition is appropriate, but not for the entire field day event.

Give the teacher this resource... http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/

Thanks Paula. I am very familiar with the website you listed. I have given this PE teacher many articles from NASPE over the years. She is old school and very resistant to change. I discussed this picking process with our principal and he is supportive of changing this practice. I told him that my son is owed an apology. I don't want this event to be one my son remembers when he is grown up--like so many of us from the 60's with PE horror stories. Thanks for your kind support.
