I've been teaching P.E. for several yrs. now. I just wanted to know what some of you guys do the first week of school w/your kids. I specifically teach only 2nd Gr. P.E. Just wanted to see if anyone does anything new and creative that I might not already be doing. It's great to get new ideas!

I teach k-5 here in Fla
so the heat dictates what I can do. A gym
is not in my realm so it is whatever we can
stand to do in the heat. I find that kickball
isn't too bad for 3-5th and we do have a kickball
intramural with 4 other schools after 4 weeks
so it works. With my new K kids I have a low level catch and throw (back to me) with a soft ball to learn names. They have to say their name when they catch the ball. Small groups at a time works best. 1st and 2nd I make sure they understand my 3 rules over and over as we play
some low level games like yard darts or use frisbees in place of those. Basically, it is
try to not melt until the heat breaks.
Ohyeah, the 3 rules are:
No name calling or mean words to others.
Hands and feet stay off others
Do whatever the coach says.

I would introduce fitness testing in the first couple of weeks of class. This way you can do the fitness tests at the beginning of the year and then again at the end of the year and compare the results.
