In the Summer I work with second and third graders at a Summer Camp. The camp is organized so we, the counselors, and the children are always playing games and moving. I have a few children who have ADHD and I find it very hard to control my group as a whole because those children seem to always cause disruption within the group. They are defiant towards me and aggressive towards their peers. I have tried to give them special privileges such as carry out equipment or running errands for me but that doesn't seem to work because it's not fair to the children who do behave and I feel like I’m reinforcing their unacceptable behavior. I have also found that continually yelling at them or sending them in to talk to a higher authority does nothing. I get frustrated and I feel like I just have to give up on them. They do get more warnings, more opportunities to fix their behaviors but it just seems like it isn't working. Also talking to their parents doesn't help because either their parents blow it off or take away things at home which doesn't solve the problem at camp. I was wondering how in a physical education class I would be able to solve this problem or work with these children in the future. |
