I remember using scooters in elementary school that we used our feet to push ourselves around the room while holding onto the sides. I also remember all the trips to the nurses offices with cut up fingers from getting them run over, kids crashing into eachother and getting injured, and kids falling off of them and banging their heads.
I recently went to my nephew's elementary school to observe and noticed they still used scooters. For being there for 3 hours i counted 10 kids being sent to the nurses office with cut up fingers. Once kid actually had to get stiches!! I also observed that these were the same scooters used when I was in elementary school 15 years ago. Shouldn't they have been updated to safer ones?
Are scooters really that safe to use in PE and what do you do to prevent injuries if you do use them?

For one of my lessons in Fitness Education i had to incorporate scooters into my lesson. I like to think of myself as somewhat coordinated and athletic and I even had trouble getting the hang of it without wanted to use my hands on the ground, and that is where you are going to get your hands ran over by other scooters, if not your own! So even though scooters can be fun in Physical Education, it may not be the safest activity.

We use the scooters quite often but only a few students at a time. So far this year( 6 weeks) we have not had any fingers run over. It will probably happen tomorrow though.
