With all the recent budget plans in education, it is inevitable that some districts will have to let employees go. I hope that the students will not be deprived of an efficient PE program. Physical education can be incorporated into the classroom with the use of pedometers and even learning through movement. However, core subjects such as history and science can also be incorporated into physical education class. I recently learned how to teach students geography by standing up and using your own body as a map. My question is, how else can school subjects be incorporated into PE? It is important for PE instructors to prove their importance in the school district as well. |

First I do think it is very important for our profession to show our worth, not only to the school district, but with everyone we meet. Second, math is an easy subject to incorporate. Everything we do is related to numbers, whether it is a race or as simple as counting steps. If you did a step program you can send the data back to the math teacher you can break it down to show the students how far they walked. |

Hi Kelly,
I developed Literature Enhanced Physical Education (LEPE, Inc.) which publishes fictional stories to introduce physical education lessons at the primary level. These books contain two to three lessons and rubrics that meet both physical education standards and English Language Arts standards. While I am excited that they make administrators happy, I am ecstatic that children love to move when they are pretending. My website is www.LEPEinc.com. I am developing this page to help teachers find ideas to incorporate Math and English into there lessons without compromising their PE lessons. I hope this helps you and others. |
