I am putting together a third grade P.E. lesson plan and I need some fun activities that I can use hula hoops with? I would like some interesting game suggestions that involve the whole class at once?

If anyone can help me that would be great. I'll check back to the list, or you can e-mail me at:

thanks,

I use a game I call, 'the revenge of the Musical Hula Hoops" (The Sequal). When the music is on students walk around the outside of the hoops, (use various locomotor skills, speeds, pathways, and the like). When the music stops the students must put on toe in the hoop, (you may later experiment with various body parts). You take away the hoops. If a student does not have a hoop, they must ask permission of a person who has one if they may join them, "May I share your hoop please. Keep changing the way the students move each time the music stops. (A great time for assessment). The game is over when there is only one to three hoops left, depending upon the size of your class.
An interdisciplinary extension would be to have the student add the number of people in their hoop, count how many groups have a similar number, then use grouping to add to get a total:
4 groups with 2 = 4(2)
2 groups of 3 = 2(3)
1 group of 4 = 1(4)
4(2) + 2(3) + 1(4) = (8 + 6) + 4 = 14 + 4 = 18
Then count the students in the class = 18, then state, "See math works!"

Here's a little warm-up with hula hoops:

Have the class get into a circle and hold hands. Start out with one hula hoop and have them get the hoop around the cicle without letting go of each others hands. They will have to take it over their heads or under their feet. You can also time them and try to get them to beat their last time. You can add another hula hoop too for more of a challenge.

Hope that helps!

Give each a hoop and follow the teacher showing various skills (tricks)
Toss catch
Roll chase catch
Roll step through hoop
Hula on waist
Hula on neck
Hula on knees
Skip It
Hula on arm (change arms)
Walk the dog
spin like a quarter, run touch the wall, catch it before it falls.
partner tricks
invent their own tricks
There are many many more things to do with hoops as well, but at least that should get you started.

Stand inside hoops and move by stutter stepping against edge of hoop - play tag. Yellow hoops are it, girls chase boys, etc.

Musical Hoops - like musical chairs

Students in groups of 3 or 4 must use at least 2 hula hoops and 1 ball to invent a new game. Must be prepared to share and demo their game in 8 min. You'd be amazed at what they come up with. Have fun ! Oh, and good music is essential as they're practicing each skill.

I'm a student at Slippery Rock University, and last week I did a lesson with an adaptive class. As a cooldown at the end of class I used hula hoops and set them up around the gym. I set them up so balls could be kicked through them. I split the class up so that there was about one hoop for every four students. Since the days lesson was kicking, I had the class play a game of kicking golf. The game went over really well with the kids, and it was an excelent cool down activity.

I believe this game is called sea turtles or something of the sort...

1)Have the whole class stand on one side of the gym (judge the group size by the size of the hoops you are using, you will understand later)
2) Next set up a story for example, you are all stranded on an island and the only way to safety is to get to the other side. There are 3 (number may change as fit) turtles here to help you (the hula hoops).
3) The class must get across using the hula hoops. The trick is the last person to travel from one hoop to another can not take let go of the previous hoop or it will "swim away" and they can not use that hoop any longer.

These directions may not be so clear but there is alot of room for your own ideas.

This is a great warm up or get to know you activity.

My students like challenging activities. I have them hula hoop around their waist while they try to do the Chicken Dance, Macarena, or Cha Cha Slide.

My students loved hoop tag. Everyone had to stay inside their hula hoop and "push" the hoop around the floor with their toes. (I told them it was preparing them for cross country skiing!) I would call out a color for "it" and when the hoop touched another hoop, they switched hoops and did 5 whatever exercise was the exercise of the moment (jumping jacks, gorilla push ups, push ups, mountain climbers, running in place, etc) and then they were on their way with a new person as it. Change the color of the "it" hoop even though the "it" person changed often. You can end by having everyone hula hooping and call the color for them to return the hoop.
