Would it be possible to have a gym class in the snow? I think that it would give the students a chance to do something different, while still being active in a different way!! Any suggestions?

What is snow?
steve from gainesville, fla :-)
It actually snowed down here when I was a senior at UF, we all jumped up in class to run outside and the prof. asked where we were going. I think she was from up north and didnt understand.
But to your question. The school I eventually taught at had an older principal that day (1977)
and had the cook fix a big pot of soup and took all the kids outside to play. One teacher told him her shoes wouldnt take it and he sent her home for better shoes to get in the snow with.
A wise old guy.

I was able to do cross country skiing with 4th and 5th graders in my school. We had enough equipment to take out a little over 1/2 of a double class. The other teacher stayed inside with the scheduled activity. It took time to have the kids try on the ski boots and sign up, but it was worth the effort. Our skis were not in the best of shape, but there weren't too many who were sliding and gliding anyway! They had a great time and were exposed to outdoor activity in the snow. I also allowed the students who owned their own equipment to bring it in and leave it in our locker room. We'd put up a sign and make a morning announcement to let the classes know we were going out. They had to have appropriate clothing to go outside. I retired before I was able to obtain snowshoes. If I had gotten snowshoes, I would have taken everyone outside.

I think it would be great to have class in the snow. I personally would have loved it as a elementary student. Just like in class it will snow later in life for the students. If P.E. class was in the snow it would give the students a chance to learn how to be physically active outside when there is snow on the ground.

AS much as I'd love to teach in the snow and have the kids do various activites, it's just too complicated to do. The hassle of making sure all the kids are bundled up properly and undressing quick enough would take just too much time from class. In most cases, having enough snow to play in usually calls for a delay or cancellation anyway. A ski-trip would be an awesome field trip/extracurricular club though.

I send about a million newsletters throughout the fall season about gearing up for winter. I don't have PE classes out there but I am in charge of recess and I'm the first one to come through this school that actually encourages playing in the snow at recess. Is it more of a hassle? Yes. But, the kids aren't at school for us, we're at school for them. I buy cheap sleds each year despite my wife's complaints :-) I have our district maintainence crew plow the snow as high as possible so we get a great hill to sled down on top of the hill we already have. Good times and the kids look forward to it every year. oh, and yes, i bundle up as well and am out tthere with them...not just watching from a distance with my whistle and coffee mug. don't get too proud to get your hands dirty in this job, folks!

This would be a good way to get the kids out of the gym during the winter days. I think Coach Peppers said sledding would be great idea if you take the time and have enough eyes to watch all the kids and make sure of their safety. You also could do races in the snow to get the kids moving, capture the flag, even tag any game to get the kids to be moving around and the snow would make it harder for the kids to move, along with making it a little more challenging while making it fun. This is good idea to get kids outside I like this idea a lot.
