Weight Training??

I am going to be a health and physical education teach soon. I am looking to teach elementary age students. I am huge into fitness and I want to incorporate some type of weight training into their classes. At what age, do should I start incorporating actual weights? How should I start getting them interested in exercising routinely?

First, Brittany congrats on your choice of being a PE instructor. I taught elementary for 36 years and in some cases I did implement forms of weight training in circuit/station work along with dyna bands(http://igreen.tripod.com/gerpe/id3.html) and simplistic work in educational gymnastics. ( http://igreen.tripod.com/gerpe/id28.html) . I started near the grade 3 level with sand filled milk containers . An example from the webpage is a video using paint cans.(http://igreen.tripod.com/gerpe/id3.html) The volume of sand was changed to meet the students abilities. Also, there was isontonics similar to just pushing against a doorway. To get them interested , I developed a fitness calendar(http://igreen.tripod.com/gerpe/id30.html) , that was sent home and returned with a parents signature. Included were tasks and skills realted to homemade equipment. That is, a larger( or smaller) phonebook can be a weight. At times it was a soup can attached with cement inside or anything that can give weight , but SAFELY . It must be understood that you be prudent when to start and make variations and alternatives. Start slowly and , then proceed when they are ready to handle any type of weight.
