As a elementary school PE teacher is it more important to focus on skills or fitness activities? I would appreciate any information possible.

As a future PE teacher, I would have to say that at the elementary school level it is very important to keep kids active with fitness activities. At the same time the skills for these activities are more important. It is important to start kids out on the right foot. Stick to the basics first, and then the activities will come much easier, and will be more fun for the students.

I agree with all of what has been said about both skills and fitness orientated programs. But there is no reason why a physical educator cannot implement both in to his or her program. I have seen many different school districts that implement both at the same time. They may end up being taught at different times throughout the week/month/year... but both are implemented into the system.

I can't figure out why people try to make physical education (or anything for that matter!) fit into one approach. What makes physical education so interesting and refreshing are the different ways to teach the same concepts/skills. We are multi-faceted and our teaching should reflect a little bit of everything! It is all inter-related. And while I am on my soap box...interdisciplinary- if you open your eyes and mind, we are...it is...nothing stands by itself. Use all your resources...

I feel that skills combined with fitness make Physial Education what it needs to be. Lifelong physical activity accompanied by sequenced skills and fitness techniques are all needed to attain a healthy lifestyle. We as Physical Educators need to make our students knowledgeable of all that they can do to "be healthy" and "active." Who says you should only do one of the two? Regardless, students need to understand the meaning behind what is being taught. Whenever I plan a warm-up, I try very hard to make sure that it corresponds to what the lesson is for the day. This way students can make connections. Also, when I explain and demonstrate to my students what is going to occur, they retain the information better.

I agree with what has been said above. I think that it is important to have both skills and fitness implemented in PE. One way that you might be able to do this is have a fitness oriented warm-up that leads into the skill that you want to teach for that day/week.
