I am currently in my elementary field and am new to this age group. I have mostly worked with middle and high school students so when it comes to understanding elementary skill levels and capabilities I feel inadequate. For example, I taught a lesson on kicking and had 2nd graders pitch the ball to one another and realized it did not work out so well. The pitcher could not roll a smooth ball and the kicker could not make contact with the ball. What is the best and quickest way to know their limitations so I can make my class as successful as possible and not discourage or bore my students?

First and foremeost, in my 36 years of teaching(retired), I never heard the word"bored" for this age level. They love just about everything and with alternatives and variations, it can work. The first order of business is to take in account that this age group needs a scope and sequence approach to apoproach their skill level with confidence. Instead of saying "pitch" use another word like from a story or related media material. If somebody ios having trouble with kicking, have them stop the ball similar to a trap in socccer, then kick it. When they practice and are ready , then they can advance to the next level/sequence. Pre- skill are rolling the ball to a target against the wall or an object. ( make the ball roll along the grass and give it a "haircut". Use a line on the floor and see if they can make it on that same direction. What type of ball are you using? I find out their limitations with the scope and sequence similar to all the older students, but watered down. Give positive feedback when they do something good. They should experience both success and working together. Change the type of ball; change the distance; make the ball a media character or anyhting that is in the genre of this age group. You must go down to their level, but yet, let them experience a transition where they move through the skills and improve. When first taught for kicking was it from a stationary position, then a few steps, and correct technique. Many times , I has them draw the skills or made skill progreesion on the bulletin board or on cones next to them that showed the proper skills.

It also depends upon the level of PE instruction they've had in the past. Don't paint all of your kids with the same "skill-brush." Be sure to do some quick pre-assessments do determine where they're at before you move into different activities.

Wow, thank you so much for this feedback! I really appreciate it and will implement it the next time I go out to teach!
