"Physh Ed" Grants Initiative
Get a Fishing Education Program Started in Your School!
The Future Fisherman Foundation, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation are partnering to sponsor the Physical Education - "Physh Ed" - Grants Initiative.
These grants provide up to $5,000 to physical education teachers to help establish a fishing and/or boating education program in their school. The grant recipient will attend a 5-day Physical Education Grants Training Workshop. Travel to and from the workshop will be included in the grant award. Room and board will be covered by the Future Fisherman Foundation. The grant is open to all K-12 PE teachers who are national members of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Applications for the 2007-2008 school year are due March 2, 2007.
Request for Proposals
The partnership requests proposals to incorporate quality, viable fishing and boating programs into curriculum-based K-12 physical education classes. Programs must incorporate fishing and/or boating into mainstream physical education curriculum during school hours. Main overall objectives must emphasize the relationship between fishing/boating and lifetime physical/mental health.
Eligible Programs
Programs must expose at least one class period to the sports of fishing, boating, or a combination of both. Activities must include instruction in one or more of the following: spin-casting, bait-casting, fly fishing, ice fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or power boating. Supplementary activities may include fly tying, knot tying, resource management/conservation, water safety, or water rescue/CPR training.
Grants funds are not available to solely support clubs, after-school programs, or supplementary-education activities. However, applicants are strongly encouraged to include an after-hours program component. All equipment and/or materials purchased for a curriculum-based program may be used for any activity thereafter as deemed appropriate by the grant recipient.
Eligible Applicants
Grant funds are available to all elementary, middle, or high school physical education instructors. Public school instructors must hold a current state physical educator certificate. Private or charter school instructors must be certified or hold a degree within a physical education domain. Grant funds under this initiative are not yet available to higher education institutions.
Applicants must be current national members of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) for the length of the grant contract period. State AHPERD membership is not sufficient for application consideration.
All applicants must be employed by either a public or private school capable of receiving and administering the funds. All applications must be signed by a school principal and school district representative (district superintendent or supervisory staff) separate from the applying individual. In the event funding is achieved, all checks must be made out to a school or affiliated school organization.
Inter-disciplinary involvement is strongly encouraged; however, all applicants must be physical education instructors.
Proposal Guidelines
Eligible budget items include equipment (fishing rods/reels, tackle, canoes, kayaks, etc.), supplementary printed materials (curriculum handbooks, classroom supplies, activity materials, etc.), safety supplies (first-aid kits, personal flotation devices, throw ropes, etc.), instructor airfare to mandatory summer workshop, student travel to on-water experiences, and fish stocking. All volunteered time and in-kind donations should be included within the proposed budget.
Grant funds may not be used for salary or benefits, guest speakers, professional guides, charter fees, insurance, permits, licenses, access fees, food and beverages, T-shirts, or anti-fishing/boating messages and/or entities. All budgets are subject to approval before grant funds are administered.
Proposals may be part of a larger program funded through additional sources; however a program objective must be completed within one year of a grant award. Grant funds are awarded up to a total of $5,000. Final budget amounts have no bearing on proposal consideration and applicants need not request more than proposal budget deems necessary.
Proposal Evaluation
Eligible programs will be evaluated on relationship to all national physical education standards as outlined by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Program activities should be available to all classroom students regardless of age, sex, race, religion, or physical/mental ability.
Eligible proposals will be jointly reviewed by a panel consisting of partner representatives, state agency personnel, and professionals within the physical education field. Each proposal is reviewed by three randomly selected panelists using a universal scoring system. Scores are averaged and proposals are funded based on final average score. Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criterion:
1. Need: Likelihood that the fishing and/or boating education program will enhance current physical health and development of students; ability to provide additional venues and/or equipment/materials for physical education and recreational activity.
2. Program Design: Demonstration of meaningful and appropriate instruction that will provide students the opportunity to learn valuable fishing and boating skills.
3. Capacity: Ability of school to support a viable fishing and/or boating program within current physical education curriculum.
4. Student Assessment: Use of multiple methods that will document student knowledge, skills, and experiential outcomes in fishing and boating, as well as achievement of school and program objectives.
5. Sustainability: The ability and commitment of the school and its partners to continue or enhance the fishing and/or boating program in the future.
Applying for Funding
Applicants must submit one original and three copies of the completed Future Fisherman Foundation National Fishing and Boating Education Grants Initiative application and all required documentation.
