At what age is it appropriate for students to begin fitness testing? Should the data be recorded or should the tests just be given to teach them the protocol?

Elementary age, somewhere between 3rd-5th grade, but more tests as they become older. I think the most important tests are measuring cardiovascular fitness and body fat, though body fat is more invasive.

It's probably good to do these as "tests" every other year. Maybe start w/ pacer in 3rd grade, do the pacer and body fat or BMI in 5th grade, and additional tests in 7th grade. I like the idea of data being recorded and communicated to parents, as parents should know about their child's health. Someone who is really apprehensive about body fat could opt out of that.

I start in K with the President's Physical Fit. Test. It has norms down to six years of age so I just use that for my 5 year olds. They like to do it and it makes it easier for them as they move up in grade. I have quite a few that win the National Fitness Award at the age of five.

I think that the earlier the students are introduced to fitness testing the better they do. Even if you don’t write down their score until 4th 5th grade it is important to have them practice on these tests are soon as they can
