In high school I can remember having to share the gym with a guys phys. ed class. The girls always wanted to play with the guys but the teachers wouldnt allow it. Any thought or reflections on this?

I think co-ed classes are important in some regards because it has to do with any other form of diversity. We can learn a lot of from each other if we are in a secure learning setting. The key is for it to be a setting that allows for success from both sexes. Also the instructor should focus on respect and being open-minded. If all of this is done, I think that it is a great idea to put both boys and girls in group together.

at my high school i am student teaching at they do not have co-ed gym classes. at time they may combine classes at times. This subject is really hard to address because alot of people like co-ed and alot of people don't. So far what i have observed the seperate gym classes seem to work. the girls dont seem as timid and shy to participate, as well as they dont have boys destracting them or making them feel like they cant compete at a male level. then again i grew up in co-ed gym classes and loved it. i think the social interaction is good for the kids. as a teacher if you run a well organized gym class i dont see why there would be a problem either way.

When I was in high school we always had a co-ed PE class. And I think it went great! But in middle school (the awkward stage) we had a choice. We got a sheet of paper and got to sign up for the activity we wanted to take. There was a strict male column where girls were not permitted to take as well as one for the females. But there was a co-ed column too. Anyone could take that activity. So you had the choice weither you wanted to have class with the opposite sex or not. It worked very well and I thought it was a great idea!

And I do agree with Kathleen about the importance of co-ed classes!

I remember in middle school there would be a girls and guys P.E. class at the same time. We would split the gym in half and the girls would be on one side and the guys would be on the other. Very rarely did we ever play any activities with the guys. During high the same thing occured. Although there were several times when both the girls and guys played different activities together instead of being seperated. I believe having co-ed P.E. class is important because it allows both genders to interact with one another and have fun!

I went to a pretty small school. In junior high the classes were seperate. As we got older and phys ed became more elective than mandatory we were in the same class. I found it to be beneficial to have phys ed class with both genders. It made me work harder but also gave us a chance to learn from each other.

I see both sides of this issue. However, I wish my gym classes were segregated by sex and not coed. When you play high school sports, they are not coed. So what are we preparing them for? In addition, the female gym teachers may motivate the girls better than I can and vise versa for me with the boys.

I agree, Ryan. In my combined jr and sr high school we had outstanding teachers and it was segregated all year until the ping pong unit. But it was great having that unit with the girls.
