What are experiences with using goal setting in your classrooms?

I'm currently researching "effective goal setting practices" as a colloquium inquiry (essentially a thesis presentation). I'd appreciate any input as to experiences and what about/how goal setting in PE is effective in your eyes. Thanks!

Hi Tim, I have used goal setting in my grade 3-5 classes for fitness testing and skill building. I have students set a goal for themselves and write it as a prediction. For example- "I predict that I will perform 50 sit-ups on our next fitness testing day." Then I post the goals outside the gym. Every time we do sit-ups during warm-up activities, I remind them of their goals. On fitness testing day, we look at our goal sheets one more time before testing. This has worked well because students keep their goal in mind and are thinking about just before the fitness test. I believe it motivates them, and in most cases, students reach their goal or come pretty close.

Becky, thanks for the input! I'll keep this in mind as I continue to develop strategies for effective goal setting...

I'm interested in helping students with not only developing and achieving goals, but also in understanding how to come up with short term strategies to meet that long term goal. Ultimately, they should be able to take this out of our classes and put it to use in the rest of their lives!

Thanks for the help!
