why should PE not be treated like any other class? Why should we not hold them to high standards and not base their grade on how well they perform rather than just effort. kids do not get an effort grade in math.

What grade? My goal in PE isn't to give a grade.
My goal is to get kids moving and to learn to love sports and physical activities. If they learn to cooperate, care about teammates, share and take responsility for their actions they are a success. If they find an activity the like and continue to play it I am ecstatic. When a group can take a ball and go get up a game, play without a ref and get along I KNOW that they have learned some valuable lessons. I had a first grade class many years ago that could actually do that.

Because advocates for PE claim it has health benefits. In order to justify a medical procedure you have to take into consideration any possible adverse effects.
