I am wondering how important it is to incorporate music within a Physical Education class? Do you think music is better for the Elementary level, Secondary level, or both? What are some specific ways music can be incorporated within a Physical Education class?

I have utilized music in my classes. In equipment catalogues, such as Gopher, you can order CDs that have snippets of music that play for certain amounts of time with a rest in between. I teach the students a stretching routine that they know. I then use the music. They know that when the music plays they stretch and they switch to the next stretch in the pause. (You can have them stretch for 30 secs and the rest is 10 secs.) Also, these cds have music that plays from 2 to 5 minustes based on how long you want the children to jog for a warm-up. These CDs can be used for stations as well. I have found that the kids are more motivated. And, once they know the routine, they stretch, for example, without even thinking (or complaining) about it.

I use music in my classroom as a great motivator and energizer. My students actually wind up begging for music! I've used music to start and stop activities so I don't have to strain my voice. I've used music to energize activities. You'd be surprised at how much music changes an activity. I don't buy my cd's, I just create playlists and cd's based on popular songs and great oldies. I absolutely love music and it adds so much to the classroom!

As a student, I enjoy having music in my physical education classes. Having music in class gets me motivated and I have more energy to perform the skills or participate in the game. I'm a sophomore in college and my first semester this year we used music in my aquatic fundamentals class to help us get a rhythm when performing the butterly. Music, as ccoachy said, is another good way to run a warm-up and stretching routine. I think music is a good idea in class.

I think music in P.E. classes is a great motivation for all ages. I know when I listen to music I just start moving, it's like an automatic reaction. It might jsut be tapping your foot to the beat or dancing around the room. It's a great way to get students moving, as well as being used in the ways that the people above commented on.
