Why with all of the teen pregnancies why can anybody truly consider abstinence only a valid concept. Yes absitinence should be taught but with more information about if people choose to have sex. |

In highschool i was a peer educator. We were told to preach abstinence before anything else, but our advisor said "welcome to the new world" basically when we were seeing more and more teen pregnancies. We would limit the things we said when it came to sex and all the names for parts with the younger students, but we would always say you can come to us with more personal questions. Usually when they did it was how to use contraceptives. I was pretty happy they would ask more about it one on one than not at all. I think students are slowly getting the message abstinence is key, but if they chose to engage in sexual activity, there are multiple ways to be safe about it |

In our high school we also had peer educators. Although abstinence was a first priority during these peer education sessions, our school did not enforce and abstinence only approach. Students were free to ask questions within reason and peer educators also spoke about the importance of safe sex along with abstinence. I feel that it is very important that both abstinence and safe sex are taught to adolescents. It is unthinkable to believe that every student is going to abstain from sex so it is important that safe sex is covered. By teaching safe sex practices, adolescents still learn that abstinence is important but they also learn ways of being safe if sexual actions occur. |

I think that students are not being educated about sex early enough. It's sad to say but kids are losing their virginity before high school even. I wasn't taught about sex until later in my highschool career. Abstinence is great but in reality kids need to be aware the risks that goes along with having sex such as pregnancies and STD's if safe sex is not practiced |

I teach at the middle school level and we have health in 8th grade. We have a two month human sexuality unit. I do stress and focus on abstinence because that is obviously the best choice. We do spend some time on contraception because we are realistic educators and realize that many of our students are not going to make the best choice and need to know how to be protected. We are VERY clear though that abstinence is what we stand by as the best choice. |
