What are the negative/positive effects of being on a strict weight lifting program at such an early age as 5-7 years old?

What do you consider a strict weight lifting program?

I have heard if children start to lift at a very early age (before 16 i have heard) (could vary do to physical maturity) it will stunt their grow. However as an alternative do push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, etc to build strength without developement problems.
