Exercise Bulimia is a new eating disorder that has just risen sharply in the last decade. People rather then employ a socially unacceptable method of dealing with calories, exercise bulimics choose to purge their bodies of nourishment soley thru sweaty endevors. They say that it is a result of the preoccupation with gym culture and media pressures not just to be thin, but toned. Just curious as to peoples oppinions about this new eating disorder.

I work in a fitness center as a pt and group ex instructor (im still a student studying to be a PE teacher) and this has been an issue that's been widely discussed at our facility. We have a lot of triathletes, marathoners, and other endurance athletes who come to the gym 2 times a day to get in their training runs, bikes, etc. . . but on the other hand we have women and men who come in 2 times a day (extremely early and extremely late) to work out for 90 minues or more. It is obvious their endeavors are not truly for training purposes. For us, the problem has been how do we monitor this? what are our responsibilities? what are our liabilities? Its a hard problem to deal with especially when its not uncommon to have athletes spend as much time in the gym. Now that the 'skinny' models in spain and now new york are being monitored, i feel that exercise bulimia could become a very large problem due to the pressures as you say, to be toned. Let's hope as Physical educators we can help student establish healthier relationships with exercise in the future.

I easily see this happening nowadays! I've worked at a fitness center and have seen it myself! I find that it is the pressure of what a person is supposed to look like and the media forcing us to have to look that way! Unfortunately, I don't know if there is a cure to help it!
