How as educators can we take a different approach to teaching drugs, alcohol and sex? I don't think that what kids learn in D.A.R.E or at least in my Health classes are very helpful. When I was in school alot of people took it as a joke. Personally, I am against drugs and have never done them. Do you think it would be beneficial to teach more about psychology so that children who have a predisposition to doing drugs and alcohol can learn early about their conditions. For example: I have a close friend who has a psych degree and is now in grad school for guidance counseling and to be a therapist. In her family she has predisposition to addictive behaviors. Alcoholics, gambling and other addictive behaviors run in her family. She has it but controls her addictions with healthier things like cleaning or school work etc. She knows how to control and is able to change it at anytime. This may be too much but maybe as educators we should know what to look for? I don't think kids get the right help they need? Kids should have someone to go to in highschool that they can talk to about their prolems. What is the best approach to teach about these subjects?
