I just read in JOPERD about the atkins diet and how poor this diet is for the average population. I could not agree more with what it said about the adverse affects of this diet. As a huge supporter of teaching healthy eating habits to our students, we should certainly make sure that they know the only real way to lose weight effectively is to eat well balanced meals and exercise regularly. I also try to push my students to take a multi-vitamin. Our students need to know how to keep wieght off year after year and not month to month with fad diets. My nutrition section of my wellness class (health one day and activity the next) is very long (12-15 days) and informative, especially covering the different diets out there. How do others teach this to there students at the high school level? Is this an important topic that you cover with care? Our country suffers from fast food and high fat diest, we need to change this now!

I found one video in a thirteen-part series by Covert Bailey that was on PBS years ago. I just bought a copy of the entire series. The episode titles "Crash Diets" explains in great detail how low carb/hi fat diets cause muscle tissue and antibodies to be dismantled and reconfigured into glucose to feed the brain and supply sugar to the muscles to keep working. The loss of muscle tissue tears down muscle bulk and reduces the calorie-burning aspect of that muscle tissue, thus reducing the BMR, and the breakdown of antibodies weakens the immune system which allows the body to catch colds/viruses easier. He uses charts and drawings in a flow chart format to diagram the various processes happening with the different diets, and they show why the high carb/low fat diets are more productive and healthier. Use google to search "Covert Bailey" and it will take you to a website by Rhonda "somebody" who has taken over Bailey's matherials since he recently retired. I have also found the entire series in well-stocked video stores. Good luck.

I think that both of you are totally right. I actually have been on the "Grapefruit Diet", which is similar to the Atkins Diet, only you are drink 8 oz. of grapefruit juice before every meal. You are really only allowed meat and salad, and while you should have both in your diet, there ARE other foods that should be a part of the diet. I can vouch for the diet working, I lost 8 lbs in 9 days, but unless you are willing to eat only meat and salad after that, you are very prone to put it right back on. The diet is used for people who need to lose weight fast for surgery, or need to drop a size for something, but it is not meant to be long term. Just thought Id give some input on that diet. Good Luck!
