The Olympics, a Tool for Motivating

With the Olympics entering the last stretch of contests, I am reminded as to the importance of movement.  I have, like most, found myself sitting and staring at the television every single night.  While I am sure that the athletes appreciate my participation as a spectator, and the television channels relish large audiences for boasts that will be made after the Olympics, I know that my caloric expenditure has not even remotely matched my caloric intake.  In other words, I haven't been moving enough.

The Olympics are so great because in spite of the controversy,  there is a tremendous richness of  history, tradition and athleticism.  The athletes are performing at phenomenal levels after overcoming unbelievable challenges.  What a great tool for inspiring young kids to move.  I know that many of the performances have inspired me to leave the couch, and get moving again.  Hopefully, the Olympics will inspire our kids to begin or continue to move and be physically active.  This issue includes several pages that not only reintroduce the history of the Olympics but also provide numerous tools and activities that revolve around the Olympics.  These tools can be used as a source of motivation toward physical activity for your students.

A recent study from Rueters reports that teens who have role models, especially ones close to them, seem to have more self-esteem, higher grades and a stronger sense of ethnic identity.
Parents who practice what they preach in terms of good eating habits may be more likely to have children who also eat well. Read more...
