Welcome to "Secondary PE" on PELINKS4U. In many eyes secondary physical education is a dinosaur that needs to be extinct.  That is, too often our general public views "gym" class as a time when youngsters are picked last, hammered by higher-skilled athletes in dodgeball games, and made fun of in locker rooms.  Luckily many outstanding professionals throughout the world are trying to improve these perceptions.  Hopefully you will find the information on this page helpful and motivational. Please help us to keep this page beneficial by sending us your ideas and teaching tips. This issue we feature several ideas for secondary PE teachers.

Secondary Physical Education Teaching Ideas

Maximize Modified Games

Too often middle and high school physical education students are expected to play full-sided games following regulation rules. Examples include 11 vs. 11 soccer or flag football and 6 vs. 6 volleyball.   Unfortunately, many of these youngsters do not possess the skills needed to be successful in these full-sided games.  Try several 5 vs. 5 soccer games or substitute ultimate frisbee rules for football and play 8 vs. 8 ultimate football.  Daryl Siedentop has provided a nice rule of thumb that states that teams should not be larger than the grade level of the participants - for example, 7th graders would not play any game that includes teams larger than 7 vs. 7.

Secondary Health Teaching Ideas
