For an advanced technological program, it is best to start with
using all the available programs, resources and information to guide
the teacher to avenues that are placed as links at Internet sites,
joining discussion groups, enlisting in trade magazines and garnering
material from other teachers, universities and companies.
With that in mind here are some ideas to incorporate as a P.R.tool
in homepages, in-services and parent teacher visitations :
A SLIDESHOW may be placed on the
homepage depicting the students in action through text and graphics.
First, use a digital camera , save the pics in MY DOCUMENTS for future
use. After downloading the software from Real Player(free), the show
can be an effective display of rubrics or your curriculum. An example
can be found at BITS&BYTES
and then clicking on the TIPS and DRILLS link for throw, catch
and hitting techniques.
Another type of slideshow can be used for parent visitation/Education
Week through an installed program called OFOTO
in which digital pictures are taken of every class and skill progression
to inform the parents what really is happening in P.E. class.

A simpler program with games and activities for educational enrichment
can be found at BLOGGER
, a daily log that uses a template to produce a diary of events.
A sign up program can be found at BLOGGER
with a username and password to access and edit the daily log.
By linking to TEACHNET,
the teacher can download the game (TV) version of the MIllionnaire
game. From that homepage and its starting page scroll on down to
Mark Damon's powerpoint download. Follow the directions
and a template can be made with the powerpoint version of that famous
TV game. By inserting your own questions, you can play the game
and include skills, vocabulary, events or gain feedback from the
students whay actually they learned in health or P.E. class. You
will need:
- ZIP PROGRAM (free)
- POWERPOINT(ask the tech department)
- Floppy disc(save the template)
- Computer

Another way to produce an effective technological bit of wizardry
is to make your own e-book.
Information on this topic can be found at BITS&BYTES
and then click on E-Book from the start page. The next step
is to download the free version of Microsoft Reader at BARNES
and NOBLE. Find the links in the left pane of the start page.
For the adventurous try clicking on Acrobat(Adobe), a program that
will include graphics.
The Reader program will be placed on your desktop. An easy way to
make your e-book is to click on Microsoft
Reader and follow the instructions and new downloads. The project
will be a part of a word processing called Microsoft Word, where an
icon will be placed in the toolbar. Click on the icon, include the
file and it will appear in the Reader program. The wonderful thing
about this is the fact a student can write their own memoirs(from
P.E.?) and include images and text. For more information send me an
e-mail. |

In this edition of the Technology
and Physical Education I would like to focus on various ways to incorporate
technology with a public relations issue to bridge the communication
gap between teachers, students, parents, community and the administration
. There are a myriad of ways to disseminate information and resources
and many of those will be covered with the thought that not all teachers
are fortified with the necessary Internet connections and computers.
The easiest way is to access a school homepage in which there are
many vehicles to chose from such as :
Family Education, which is the school homepage at Allegheny/Hyde
Park Elementary in the Kiski Area School District in western Pennsylvania
. By using ready made templates and basic html, an exemplary page
can be utilized for school information, calendar , links and pertinent
resources for the parents.
As an integrative project, I have maintained two student editors
to tell there stories about what is happenning in their school and
private lives. This concept reinforces an important tie with physical
education and the whole child. This program is unique in that no
other teacher or core subject area has attempted to correlate the
need for technology except the physical education curriculum. For
an example check out the following links called Lynnal's Place
and Chuck's World .
Another homepage from SCHOOLNOTES
uses the same concept of information but an added program called
flashcards uses the approach of vocabulary or skill progression
for a more informative look. The TEACHERWEB
homepage uses a more simpler technique for neophte computer examples.
A different appraoch with lesson plans can be accessed at YOURHOMEWORK
in which the teacher may include lesson plans to view by students
and parents . This may be used for a homework or a student will
an illness to make up lost work. And CUSTOMCLASSROOM
is a great way to place lesson plans, benchmarks , vocabulary and
assessments for students and parents.
Along with the homepages, there are software programs, slideshows,
interactive games, searches, word processing, projects and a plethora
of Internet sites to highlight public relations, technology
and physical education.
Within all the resources, the teacher should have the following:
- Internet and server/ provider
- E-mail
- Printer
- Scanner
- Digital camera
- Floppy/CD'S
In previous technology issues (archives) there were valuable resources
provided to integrate the homepages and necessary materials to help
the teachers though the technology concers such as:
- HTML
- SEARCHES
- LINKS
- HOMEPAGES
- INTERNET
- INSTANT MESSAGING
- VOICE PROGRAMS
Sincerely,
Gerry

FLAG PROJECT
With the unfortunate event of September 11th, 2001, I decided to
incorporate the ideals of patriotism and citizenship for the month
of September and part of October. Using ideas from different behavior
models , I took the following steps :
- Download an American Flag
from Teachnet
(clip art)
- Took digital pics of each class
- Posted behavioral program (respect for others, stay on task
, follow directiuons, help others in need, and school pride)
Each week they received a colored red stripe on the flag and the blue
background with stars. After four weeks , the flags were placed on
the bulletin board to see what classes were model citizens. Their
class picture and teachers name were posted. The ensuing behavior
was the best that anybody could imagine .
Now, each month a different theme will be used to reinforce past and
future classroom management.

ADOBE -PDF
This is another venue to produce resources and information by using
a portable document format (pdf). Click on ADOBE
for details how to include this program on a homepage or an e-mail
attachment. First, you will have to download the Acrobat Reader(4.0)
from the ADOBE site. It is a way to compress large files and graphics
for easier viewing. There is an icon from the reader program in
the toolbar to place all the pages on a floppy disc, which will
make for easier mode of communication. Another url that will direct
you for more information can be found at Createpdf
For an exclusive search engine in any topic or query needed can
be linked at SEARCHPDF |

Effective
Teaching Breakthrough - Immediate Feedback Video
If there is an interest for using
webcams for video-conferencing try clicking over to
GEOCITIES and start a homepage using
the pagebuilder. Of course , you should be equipped with a webcam and program
software. From CAM
, you can access the information about placing the webcam on the homepage
by copy and pasting it into a file.
Another voice/video program can be found at VOXPHONE.
You must purchase the software(about 40.00$) and the components
includes the webcam(little extra$). In this way , you can either
talk , text or view with another person. This would be a great way
to communicate with other students and teachers around the world.
After installation all calls are free - anytime and anywhere.
