Do you think that a field day is more effective in the elementary level rather than the High School level, or do you feel it is equally effective with both levels given the right activities? |

I think it is all about how you promote it. When I taught at the high school level, we had field day type activities, but we called it a battle of the classes. The kids had a blast, everyone was involved, and it promoted school spirit. We held it around our homecoming, and everyone was really into it. So, YES, I think you can do it with the right activities. Elementary students are usually very into field day, and it doesn't take as much promoting, but I think it can be equally effective either way. GOOD LUCK!! |

I think it all depends on how you promote and run the event. When i did some prestudent teaching on the highschool level we ran the field day event as part of a pep rally. We had battle of the classes and at the end the winner of school points recieved the spirit stick. The whole week we had theme days also in which students were encouraged to wear school colors or wear wacky shirts or wear funny hats and for each student in each grade participated they recieved a spirit point. at the end of the week they were tallied in with the results of the field day and the winner of the event kept the spirit stick until next years event. So i think it has to do with how u present and promote the event. If you make the spproach and themes age appropriate it tends to be very successful. |

I think that a field day is a great idea. This can be successful for any grade level as long as you adapt the activities for your specific age groups. As a future teacher, I think this is a great idea and coming from a school district that does this every once in a wile I can say that it does encourage physical activity in and out of the classroom. Almost all of the student love to participate in these events and enjoy them very much. Field days are wonderful as long as you can adapt them for specific age groups and maturities.

I believe that field day is equally effective at all grade levels. Especially now that Physical Education time seems to be decreasing, field day would give the students an opportunity to get out of the class room and get in some physical activity. There are studies that prove that physical activity in a students school day can significantly increase levels of academic performance. As for grade levels, no matter the age of the students this time spent out of the classroom, being active will benefit a student of any age. |

I think that field days can be equally effective as long as you have activities that are appropriate for the age groups. In my elementary and high school we had field days. A lot of students will participate on their own and will enjoy it! There was always more people participating in the field days rather than pe class where we just played sports. |

I held a track & field day for our 7th and 8th grade classes this spring. The students really seemed to enjoy it. We tried to keep it as organized as possible to prevent behavior problems. I also think field days bring interest to the sport for when they are able to compete. It is a lot of fun and the kids get a great workout. |

I feel that having a field day for any age group would be effective. Naturally, depending on the field day activity, younger students are going to be more excited about it. However older students sometimes just need a break in their regular routine, which in turn might spark some excitement. |

I believe field day is equally effective in both elementary and high school levels. I believe that you have to base your field day activities on age appropriate tasks. Elementary level kids will have fun playing any type of games while high school students will respond better to more competition. |

I have held field days for 20+ years. I work in a really small elementary and do it like this.
K-1 do group activities and get a participation ribbon. For 2-5 have about 5 running events and 5 field events. I try to have something everyone can do well at. For each event I give ribbons (1st 2nd 3rd) I have 4 different group too. 8-9 boys, 8-9 girls, 10-11 boys and 10-11 girls. The ones that come in first or second qualify for our County Field day. We have 4 other schools in our county that participate.
It works well and is fun. |

Go for it! If you are positive about the event the students will follow your lead. You do, however, need the support of your colleagues to help promote and run the event! |

I think it would be a great idea to incorporate field day at a high school level! As a recent high school graduate I can't count the numerous times I heard fellow classmates say how much they loved field day in elementary and how much fun they had. Some of my classmates still go to their elementary schools and volunteer durning field day! Field Day is a perfect way to increase physical activity in schools, and promote team work and school spirit. The activities at elementary school and high school level would of course need to somewhat different and cater to the specific age groups. High school students are still kids at heart and love to have fun and compete with fellow classmates!
