Step By Step Section Editing Process
(Courtesy of Marina Bonello)

Note: Marina wrote these instructions when first starting out as a complete novice editor. She succeeded using some of the free programs that are available. (Marina is a PC user)

Stage 1 : Developing the Page.

I strongly recommend using Internet Explorer FRONT PAGE EDITOR - just like NETSCAPE COMPOSER, you can easily edit the content of a starting template page. Important to first open the template page, next chose"OPEN WITH FRONT PAGE EDITOR" and save the same file with a different name. I called it 100900.html (this was my code for october-9th-00) I like this Front page editor as I was able to work with a "what you see is what you get" environment as in Netscape, but without any of the blinking of Netscape which slows down the process. With regard to the content itself, I stuck to the Format Steve provided on the page and just overwrote the sections as necessary - inserting links or images from the editor program itself.

For the content selection: I referred to my bookmarks , but also sought through the recent NASPE-L, PE DIGEST postings, my current journals, NASPE-NEws etc etc.

Stage 2 : Posting the Page to the web site

For this I tried two routes.

1) First route involves going to the website tocows.com and downloading a file transfer protocol program. When you are on the tocows.com site, you will note a orange box with the title SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS - and within this there is a list of choice. Being a Win 95 user, I selected the Win95/98 option and clicked on it. You will note a screen with various options for downloading sites from all over. Although from Malta, I still selected the USA site - I selected "New Jersey" as a downloading site as this has been recommended to me as being a fast route and then clicked on the "Go" button. This takes you to a "Select a mirror site" - and you just select and click one of the sites. In the next screen, just under the TWOCOWS banner, you can type into the search boxes: "FTP" and then click" Go" or else indicate WS-FTP PRO 6.5 as the specific software you want to download. Down load the software following the directions on the screen.

*Note from Steve: FTP software is also available at the following URL (If this does not work you can go to download.com for various other FTP programs:
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10064-100-2457857.html?tag=st.dl.10000-103-1.lst-7-1.2457857

Once the software is downloaded, you are on your way to start posting your site to the web. In the default opening window of the FTP program it is important to first "NEW SITE" - this would be to help you create a new connection to the PELINKS4U server - just type in site name in the box that appears as "PELINKS4U" and in the box HOST ADDRESS OR ISP just fill in the http://www.pelinks4u .org address

Next fill in your user ID and password, as supplied to you by Steve - you will notice this on the right hand side of your screen. You also have to create a local folder - I found it easier to create this in the Route Directory - so I called mine c:/PELINKS4U - this is the local site folder from which I will transfer my files up to the PELINKS site at http://www.pelinks4u.org/sections/elementary/bonello - the latter being my REMOTE SITE.

Once this is complete and you connect, and then it is a simple drag and moving of files from the left side (the local site folder) to the right hand side of the screen - the REMOTE folder. Once you are ready you can disconnect/close and the transfer is ready.

Tip: When you transfer the page, you will also need to transfer any gif/jpeg files that accompany your html file which contains the content. For this reason I created my c:/PELINKS4U and it contains all the files - html and figures that I want to transfer for a particular issue.

If you need a copy of the manual that accompanies the WS-FTP program let me know and I can send you an adobe acrobat document.

2) An easier way to upload the page to the PELINKS site is by using Front Page Editor itself - it will do all the work for you itself - just pull down File menu and select the "SAVE AS" option - it will ask you where you want to save the page and you simply type in the address of the REMOTE SITE - in PELINKS site at http://www.pelinks4u.org/sections/elementary/bonello and everything happened on its own for me.
