Book: Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education
Authors: Jacalyn Lea Lund and Mary Fortman Kirk
Pages: 248
Book Reviewer: Jana Meeks
Price: $27

The book entitled "Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education" is an excellent resource for assessing students in the secondary level. The text is very easy to follow, covers a range of performance based assessment ideas, and offers step-by-step instructions on how to implement these ideas into your current curriculum.

The book is designed to benefit the physical educator in the middle school and high school setting. The length of the book is 230 pages, it is very reader friendly, and it includes sample forms and a glossary.

The authors begin by explaining why there is a need to move towards performance-based assessment in the physical education classroom. This approach provides consistency in evaluation, accountability, and effective teaching techniques.

The text then moves on to explain how performance based assessment is achieved, and the advantages of using it. Clearly described is how to develop and use rubrics effectively, and the book provides guidelines and examples of rubrics for specific units.

One area I found of particular interest was the suggested use of student journals and portfolios in the physical education curriculum. I feel this provides an excellent opportunity for vertical alignment in physical education; a proper transition from middle school to high school in performance based assessment. The text also provides ideas for culminating assessment.

The book explains progression in assessment very well, and provides sample units in the following areas: tumbling/gymnastics, archery, and golf, badminton, tennis, and soccer.

I give the text 5 stars for effectively providing instruction on proper performance based assessment in physical education. The book takes the physical educator from where they are, and instructs them on how to implement a very objective evaluation tool into current curriculum. It breaks down this transition in detail, and offers variety for the physical educator to use in the classroom while establishing a consistent, accountable form of assessment.
