NEED IDEAS FOR KIDS WHO JUST DON'T CARE: Ok, I have been teaching P.E. now for 8 years. Each year, it gets worse and worse about kids who just don't care. It doesn't matter what activity I have, they don't want to participate or go so slowly there is no way they are getting their heart rates up. I feel a lot of it has to do with a change in teachers. The newer teacher has been here 2 years. He has a wealth of experience as he retired from another school. However, he does things differently than the last teacher. I have tried to continue on with our curriculum and have made changes, but things seem to keep getting worse. I even went to a choices when we are in our small gym of weight lifting, fitness equipment or the sport activity. I know in PE things are changing, and more is about being fit and active instead of games. So, I have decided I am going to go to a fitness unit for a while to get kids active again. Does anyone have one they would share. We have used stations but find h.s. kids dislike them greatly. We have heart rate monitors and used them for 3 years. The last 2 years, we haven't as the other teacher doesn't see the need. I think they help tremendously even though kids hate wearing them. I'm just frustrated and really starting to hate teaching P.E. I came here looking for suggestions as I am seriously thinking about a career change. I just hate not being able to get kids to do activities. Please share in the forum.
VALUE OF ADAPTED BACKGROUND: I am not yet a teacher, but I wonder how critical it is to have good training in adapted fields before you start into the profession. My college offers an adapted minor. Does anyone think that this is something I should try to achieve before finishing school? Please share in the forum.
GRADING THE MILE RUN I have talked with my department on our grading policy. I just want to know how other people assess the mile run. Do you grade strictly on performance? If so what do you do for those students that are very over weight and can not physically make the cut-off time? Please share in the forum.
NETBALL I was looking into starting a netball unit in my PE classes, but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to put together my own netball hoops/goals. To buy the netball pole and hoop sets is very expensive. We already have many volleyball pole/standards and was wondering if anyone has tried using the volleyball poles and making hoops out of something else or buying hoops separately that can be clamped onto volleyball poles. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Please share in the forum.
ELIMINATING COMPETITION IN PE: The new push for many PE programs is to elimnate scoring and competetive play in sports. I am very against this, and have learned many lessons through winning and losing in sports, and it helps motivate me and my teamates. Why is this such a big issue since after highschool life i sall about winning and losing? Please share in the forum.
WEARING SLEEVELESS SHIRTS IN PE: I have had numerous experiences where schools ban sleeveless shirts from schools, but sometimes allow them in PE class. What are some of the issues that cause teahcers to ban sleeveless whirts in PE, I have no problem with it personally. Please share in the forum.
