I am in complete agreement with this editorial. When people experience the joy of movement, they do not need electronic gimmicks. It is up to us to create an atmosphere that will encourage all of our students to become life long movers and physical learners.

I have a few thoughts in regard to this editoral. We can only do our best in helping kids make choices that will impact them the rest of their lives. I do not want to mimimize the impact that we have on kids, but more times than not, the people that we surround ourselves with outside of the school environment and what we fill our time with ususally influences our decisions when it comes to nutrition and exercise and/or physical activity. It is my hope that I can influence just one kid per year to be life-long pursuers of living a healthy lifestyle. That is MY GOAL!!

The following is a comment from Frank Forencich in response to the editorial provided by Phil Lawler in our June/July pelinks4u editorial (to archive in August).

Frank was our guest editor in May, and readers might be interested in his perspective on physical education posted
in the May issue of pelinks4u and available in our archives.

Phil Lawler completely misses the mark with his pro-technology stance. I have seen Lawler give presentations and one thing is obvious: the reason he succeeds in teaching has nothing to do with tools or technology. He succeeds because of his passion and desire. (And the deep pockets of his community.) He could do just as well with rocks and sticks. And that is the whole point. Technology is a complete side-show and a colossal waste of energy. Not only that, it's a distraction from what we really need to pay attention to: the body itself.

In teaching PE, the thing that matters most is interest, desire, and engagement. The tools are irrelevant. I invite Lawler to spend a year teaching with a medicine ball and a hula hoop. I am certain that his results would be just as good or better. Human beings (and other animals) have been healthy for millions of years before technology. Dancers and martial artists have succeeded for generations without any gee-whiz devices. Gadgets are a dead end.
