Getting the Fats or Facts Straight!
In the most recent edition of "PE News" (emailed to those
of your who have subscribed - see box below if you aren't a subscriber)
we goofed. Actually I goofed!
I reported that nearly 50% of school children were overweight.
This was incorrect and it's important this misinformation is corrected.
Arizona State Professor and noted children's fitness authority,
Chuck Corbin quickly informed me that
in fact according to the NIH about 13% of children are overweight.
Others have estimated about one in five. The 50% figure I quoted
was closer to the status of the adult population (61%).
Since then I consulted the Center for Disease Control (CDC) web
site to get the facts straight. In this month's "Health, Fitness,
& Nutrition" section we include facts and figures on overweight
and obesity taken directly from the CDC.
The situation is not encouraging but fortunately as yet children's
health is not as bad as I earlier reported.
I apologize for the inaccuracy and hope it hasn't created any embarassment
for you. As it happens I mentioned it at our recent school board
meeting and will need to go back and make a public correction.
Please visit our "Health, Fitness,
& Nutrition" section (and the other sections too!)
this month. In the editorial I also suggest that physical educators
too frequently take the wrong approach to developing fitness. You
can also read my opinion in our PE Forum
and post a response.
We hope school has started well for you. Thanks again for supporting
