The Metamorphosis of Classroom Management

"A classroom is a place where students gather to learn. Creating a safe and orderly environment in the classroom is a survival skill for teachers and optimizes the learning environment for students. The strategies teachers use to create such classroom environments have been studied and developed as the area of 'classroom management' for many years. This article will examine recent changes in this field and provide concrete examples of new approaches."

This article begins with a brief historical perspective, then examines the "shifting from the organizational level to the learner" that is taking place.

"Routines are processes or skills; they can be taught in the same way that teachers teach any other skill. Because teaching should reflect what we know about how people learn, it is helpful to examine the three phases a learner goes through when acquiring a skill or process."

These three phases, (1) constructing models, (2) shaping (3) and internalizing, are discussed in this article. Reward and assessing behavior are discussed near the end of the article, which concludes with an excellent list of references.

 Integrated Teaching Ideas
Oh Deer!

This Integrated Teaching Idea was taken from a lesson plan developed by Miranda Hale, Kim Riley and Amy Ottensmeier, who are preservice elementary classroom teachers currently enrolled in PE 309 at Southeast Missouri State University. This lesson, and other integrated science lessons taught this semester by preservice elementary classroom teachers, can be found at this link.

Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will ask the students to identify what they think is necessary for humans to survive. Then, the teacher will ask if they think the same needs apply to every living animal, including deer. Then he/she will ask if anyone has ever seen a deer. The students will describe what is necessary for deer to survive.

Instructional Input and/or Modeling Behavior:
The teacher will go on to clarify that deer need food, water, shelter, and space. The teacher will explain to the students that they are going to be playing a game to show how the environment affects population of animals.

Guided Practice and/or Individual Practice:
Students will be divided into two groups, the deer and the habitat components (food, water, and shelter). If the student is in the deer group, they will decide whether he/she needs food, water, or shelter. If the student is in the habitat component group, he/she will decide which component they want to be. The students from the deer group will try to find a match from the habitat component group. If they are successful, they will be able to “reproduce”. If they are unsuccessful, the students from the deer group die and become part of the environment.

Method of Checking for Understanding and Comprehension/Closure and Assessment:
After the class plays the game several times, the teacher will lead an informal group discussion on what was learned by playing the game.
