As a guest at the 2001 AAHPERD National Convention & Exposition in Cincinnati, Ohio, I have a much better idea of what my husband Bane does in his jobs as secondary physical education teacher, textbook author, and workshop presenter.
I met many of the dynamic educators with whom he networks. Attending several excellent sessions gave me new ideas to use in my own language arts and theatre classes. Viewing the various books, materials, equipment, and demonstrations in the Exhibition Hall was enlightening.
Bane was especially interested in the Digi-walkers and climbing walls. Not only was the Convention invigorating, the host city Cincinnati was a terrific place. Our hotel and many great restaurants were within walking distance of the Convention Hall. No shuttle buses were necessary. Being away from the stresses of home and jobs for a few days, Bane and I enjoyed the time together.
We're already making plans for San
Diego, CA, in 2002. In addition to the National convention, each district and state has a conference. Check out this partial list:

According to former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater, "the sixteen National
Millennium Trails connect our nation's landscape, heritage, and culture, and demonstrate our national commitment to quality of life for all Americans." For the physical education teacher, the National Millennium Trails provide themes for outstanding lesson ideas. Possibilities include:
"How Far to Katahdin?"
In this PE Central lesson, students learn what it takes to hike the Appalachian Trail.
"How Far to Freedom?"
Students study the Underground
Railroad to learn what it took for enslaved African Americans to run to freedom in Canada.
"Bike the Mississippi River Trail"
Students study bicycling, and what it takes to ride a bicycle from St.Louis to New Orleans.
"Paddle in the North West"
Students map and plan a canoe trip in and around Puget sound and follow Native American trade routes on the Cascadia
Marine Trail.
Students can work in teams and complete their "journey" using exercise machines, bicycles, rowers, and DigiWalkers while recording their progress on a map of their chosen trail.
Additional lessons may have students make reports on recreational, historical, and cultural activities along the trail, count calories and plan a menu, or develop training programs to help prepare for their journey.

The Cold Within
Six humans trapped by happenstance
in black and bitter cold
Each possessed a stick of wood,
Or so the story's told.
Their dying fire in need of logs,
the first woman held hers back
For on the faces around the fire
She noticed one was black.
The next man looking 'cross the way
Saw one not of his church
And couldn't bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.
The third one sat in tattered clothes
He gave his coat a hitch,
Why should his log be put to use
To warm the idle rich?
The rich man just sat back and thought
Of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.
The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from his sight,
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.
And the last man of this forlorn group
Did naught except for gain,
Giving only to those who gave
Was how he played the game.
The logs held tight in death's stilled hands
Was proof of human sin,
They didn't die from the cold without,
They died from the cold within.
