CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP CALENDAR

 Editorial
I would like to thank you for visiting my first edition of the Technology and Physical Education section. We are partially dependent on YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS to make this a successful site.

Please send me an email with your thoughts and ideas, and become a part of this exciting new online magazine/newsletter. Even if you do not wish to write something yourself, if you have an area which you think would benefit from attention, I will try to research the area and find useful information to share with everyone.

In addition to content ideas and contributions, I would also be very interested to receive your feedback on the site, both areas of improvement and any things that you have really liked. My e-mail address is rsmorey@ucalgary.ca.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ruth Morey Sorrentino

 Teaching Ideas

For those of you using a Macintosh computer, you'll want to know about their newest software iMovie 2. This is the second release of this software and is an excellent tool for creating and editing video clips.

In terms of creating an instructional video on a specific sport or skill, iMovie will allow you to place together various different video clips. Between clips you can insert transitions. On top of clips, the software allows you to add titles and captions, which allows you to highlight the specific elements or key points of the skill. iMovies can be played directly on the computer, or saved as a quick time movie which can be inserted into a PowerPoint presentation, web site, or even outputted to VHS video.

 Featured Web Sites

(c) 2000 Judo Information Site at JudoInfo.com. Used with permission.

The Judo Information Site is an excellent site with everything you need to know about participating in judo and learning the correct techniques. The site include step by step diagrams, descriptions, and animations like the one above. I recently asked the sites creator Neil Ohlenkamp a few questions about his site.

Q: What gave you the idea to create this site?

A: When the internet was young (1995) I could immediately see the potential to use it in a way that brought people together to avoid duplication of effort. Material that I had already prepared could be shared with other Judo teachers so that they would not have to work on the same teaching aids, handouts, lessons, etc. At the same time I wanted to promote Judo on the internet so it would be represented along with other sports and martial arts. At the time there were no comprehensive Judo sites, so I started the Judo Information Site. I thought it was unfair that such a wonderful sport was not represented on the internet.

Q: How did/do you envision people will use your site?

A: There are many ways my site is used. First it is a resource for teachers and students who want to know more or use the material in class. This includes the extensive sections on research, techniques, history, and principles. Second, it is a tool for recruiting new students and getting people interested in Judo. This includes the sections on finding a Judo club, animations of dynamic throwing techniques, explanations on what Judo is, etc. Third it is a tool for non-Judo people who want to know something about Judo, e.g. to write an article, school assignment, related research, etc. Fourth, it is a way to bring the worldwide Judo community together to discuss and share current events, obtain tournament schedules and results, find friends in other countries, see photos of Judo champions, enjoy Judo humor, etc.

Q: What can you suggest to others with a strong knowledge content in one area, who might be thinking of creating their own instructional site?

A: It is hard to compete with established and popular web sites so the subject must be one that is not already covered. In addition, I have always believed that content is what brings visitors. Spend more time adding valuable content than making design changes. Visitors appreciate a site that is quick loading, easy to navigate, and stable. This makes it easy for someone without a lot of technical web-building experience to set up a site by focusing on strong content.
