CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP CALENDAR

 Editorial
This week the PELINKS4U Editorial Team brings you a review of several online educational opportunities. As you probably have noticed, more and more academic institutions are offering online courses. We are featuring those we know about that have programs focused on physical education. If you know of others please contact us so we can include them in future publications.

We would also invite those of you who have experience taking online courses to share your insights with other readers. We know it is a different experience, and if you've been a participant, you probably have tips for those considering enrolling in some type of online instruction. Please post your comments to the "Technology" section on our PE Forum. Click here for a direct link.

Once again we appreciate your support and input. This is your site, and the quality of the information depends on you!

Sincerely,

PELINKS4U

 Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech: Online MS in Physical Education

Virginia Tech started its "electronic" masters degree program in the summer of 1997. It was designed for full-time health and physical education teachers who wanted to complete their degree, yet could not relocate to Blacksburg.

This masters program is a two-year program of 36 semester hours. A unique aspect of this masters degree program is its focus on "project based learning." Participants use their own programs to complete a series of related action research projects designed to encourage a deeper understanding of effective teaching and program effectiveness.

Participants are required to spend two weeks in Blacksburg the first summer, and two more weeks in the second and final summer. Participants complete course assignments, and maintain connection with classmates and professors through e-mail and access to a program Internet site.

For complete program information please click here to visit Virginia Tech's web site, or contact Dr. George Graham.

Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia.

 Mailing Lists & PE Forum

Physical Education Mailing Lists and the PE Forum

If you are interested in technology (hence reading this page) you are probably also signed up on one or both of the two major PE listservs. In case not, check out the NASPE-L and PE-Talk lists. Click here for contact information. Both of these lists are mailed on a regular base, and connect you with 1000s of colleagues with whom you can share information.

If you are already a listserv regular, we would like to encourage you to visit the PE Forum. This is a bulletin board onto which you can post and read messages. The nice thing about bulletin boards is that you have complete control over your reading. If you are a technology user you already know how email can become overwhelming.

Bulletin boards are great locations for addressing issues that might be of interest to only one group of teachers. They allow us to post information that becomes permanent and can be revisited in the future.

Another nice feature about the PE Forum is that if you choose to register, you can request to be notified by email when new postings are made to sections of personal interest to you. For example, if you are only interested in Elementary Physical Education, you will be informed when new postings are made to this section, but not to the other sections.

Please visit the PE Forum. It is still in the early stages of design so we would appreciate your feedback. If you are interested in becoming a moderator of one of the sections, please let us know that also. Become a participant on issues that are important to you!

Finally, let your colleagues know about the PE Forum so that the listservs can be used for newsworthy items of interest to everyone.

 Central Washington University

Central Washington University: MS Online - Physical Education and Health Education Emphasis

This year the Department of PEHLS at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA will be introducing a new online option of its MS in PEHLS, with an emphasis in physical education and health education.

This 45 credit program will start with an initial limited enrollment of approximately 10 students. The degree will be completed in a little less than 18 months. Beginning this coming summer, participants start by taking classes during an intensive two-week orientation session on the Ellensburg campus. This will be the first of two onsite instructional portions to the degree. Following this, orientation participants will complete two 3 credit classes online each quarter. Program delivery will be through the popular "Blackboard" system on online instruction.

This degree is intended for individuals interested in teaching both physical education and health education, and classes from both areas of emphasis are included in the program. A tentative schedule is available here.

As noted earlier, registration for this program is limited and reviewing of completed applications will begin on April 23rd. For more information, visit the CWU web site, or contact Dr. Leo D'Acquisto.

Ellensburg is located next to the Cascade Mountains about 2 hours east of Seattle in Washington State.

 University of Texas

University of Texas: Online MS in Kinesiology & Physical Education

You are now able to earn the Master of Science in Kinesiology from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, without ever coming to campus.

All of the courses for the degree have been, or are being, developed by graduate faculty from six University of Texas campuses. In addition to UT Permian Basin, they are UT Arlington, El Paso, Pan American, San Antonio, and Tyler. Within a couple of years, at least sixteen courses will be available online. From this pool of courses, you are able to complete all of the coursework for the masters degree at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin online.

The initial courses being developed for the online Masters degree in Kinesiology will be most appropriate for athletic coaches, and physical education teachers.

Class sizes will be limited, and courses are designed to enhance interaction between faculty and students. Chat rooms, threaded discussions, and email will be used to facilitate discussions. Team projects, and small group discussions, will be used to help students share their teaching, coaching, athletic, and other professional experiences with each other as part of the learning process.

For complete program information, please click here to visit UTPR's web site, or contact Dr. Lois Hale.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin is located in Odessa, Texas.

 West Virginia University

West Virginia University: MS Online in Physical Education

Physical education teachers and coaches are busy people. Physical education teachers and coaches typically teach throughout the day, and then coach during the evenings and weekends. Therefore, traditional Masters degree programs that require students to take courses at a certain time and place are often simply impossible for teacher/coaches to fit into their busy schedules.

The School of Physical Education at West Virginia will begin to offer the Master of Science degree in Physical Education as an off-campus, distance education program beginning in the summer of 2001. The Master's degree program is a 2 year, 36 credit degree program with both on-site and distance education components.

For complete program information please click here to visit the West Virginia web site, or contact Dr. Lynn Housner.

West Virginia University is located in Morgantown about one hour north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  Emporia State University:

Emporia State University: Online MS In Physical Education

Emporia State's Masters Degree in Physical Education has two degree plans available: Thesis option - 34 credit hours including a written thesis and oral defense of the thesis. Non-thesis option - 35 credit hours including a project and oral presentation of the project.

All instruction is conducted through the internet and email. A major portion of each class is built around interactivity and discussion with a diverse group of classmates from various geographic regions. Participants interact with others through an electronic discussion board, or forum discussion, set up by the instructor of the class. The majority of assignments are e-mailed. Regular mail may also be an option for certain assignments.

For complete program information, please click here to visit Emporia State's web site, or contact Dr. Mark Stanbrough.
