 Editorial

In this issue of Technology Education, I would like to cover some important details for easy computer maintenance tips, E-adventures - a hands-on, real world experience in all areas of technology and its something the students will love to do.

Included in this technology presentation will be some tech tips to be used with a power point program, and two valuable websites that promote health and physical education for public relations and a valuable tool to integrate and inform the parents, community and administration that we are real teachers capable of being a viable part of an overall education.

Also, I would like to introduce a new and improved audio program that will improve our listening skills and an informative and relaxing vehicle for improvement of technological trends. This may be incorporated as a learning experience or teaching tool resource.

Sincerely,

Gerry Cernicky
Technology Section Editor

Teaching Ideas

PRESENTATION SOFTWARE:
  • This includes Powerpoint, Star Office and other packages that include authoring tools and HTML.  This can be used to help streamline student note taking procedures, introduce more gripping visuals when illustrating concepts, and to help them organize thoughts more clearly. They will begin to naturally apply this deeper understanding to their own presentations and become familiar with the software.
  • Word processors
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentation packages
Use a presentation package or projection aid to present one of your favorite activities in health or physical education. Schedule on  a weekly basis so that they become used to seeing you using the package.

Modify this as necessary depending on the resources available. These projects can range from  a book report to creative demonstrations .

SPREADSHEET SOFTWARE:

Use EXCEL or STAR OFFICE to provide functionality for tracking data, generating graphs or calculating formulas.  Integrate them into all areas of the curriculum.
  1. Begin with an introduction to the concept of data and attributes. A good data sample can be generated focusing on human attributes such as gender, hair color, eye color, etc.
  2. Identify the attributes you wish to track and enter into a spreadsheet.
  3. Generate several graphs and pie charts that visually illustrate the data collected.
  4. Begin to work towards a natural integration strategy that they will use this tool often.

 Computer Maintenance

  1. KEEP COOL and SAFE
Check to be sure that the vents around the computer are open and clear of obstruction and dust.
  2. CHECK LEVEL
The biggest enemy to your computer is placing it on its side. If a tower model , keep it vertical. If its wide, keep it horizontal. If not, their will be pressure on the hard drive and cause it to fail.
  3. REMOVE DIRT
By  a can of compressed air to blow out debris in the keyboard and place a cover over the keys.
  4. PREVENT POWER PROBLEMS
Windows users should SCAN DISK and DEFRAG in order to check for errors and defragment the hard drive.
  5. BACK UP
Save documents and work by using a diskettee or zip drive or burn them to a CD.
