"Touched by Disney"
(By
Janelle Schumacher, Fargo, North Dakota, Centennial High School)
From the time
I got picked by by the limo driver to the amazing Awards Show I was
held in the highest esteem by everyone I met. Thirty-eight of the most
exceptional teachers who every day touch the lives of school aged children
taught me so much. As I sat and listened to their three minute speeches
about their teaching styles, I was impressed on how much these teachers
really cared about their students. The insights I gained when I looked
into the eyes of these outstanding teachers was that each teacher there
was there because of their love of teaching and working with children.
And it didn't matter if the school district was rich in money, they
were all rich in the excitement of teaching.
It was so
inspiring to be with teachers who were so committed to learning that
their ideas kept popping out. The Disney Learning Partnership has high
expectations for us thirty-nine and in turn the Disney Honorees had
many ideas on how to expand the enrichment for others to see. The Disney
Corporation spent 6 million dollars in education with pilot programs,
pilot schools, and teacher programs and are 100% behind education. It
was so special to sit in on the news conference that Disney hosted on
Monday morning to let teachers, administers, and children show and tell
how much they appreciated the financial backing of Disney. It was exciting
to listen to the excitement of the participants.
When the
Disney Teacher Award show was taped on Sunday, we all felt so honored
to have our one minute presentation shown for the nation to see. The
film taped while at our individual schools will be shown nationwide
on public TV for advertising teaching in the United States. Disney's
commitment to advanced learning will continue though the efforts of
the thirty-nine honorees. All honorees will attend a seminar at Disney
World next summer to learn leadership techniques along with their perspective
principals to shared within their own states in the 2000 school year.
I can say
the most enjoyable memory was the Disneyland parade down Main Street.
All the honorees were placed on a float and with dancing flag twirlers
and music waved our way down Main Street with the crowds screaming and
cheering! It felt like such an honor and when the confetti fell on us
at the end of the parade, tears were plentiful!
An experience
of a lifetime and now that so many more people know about it, nominate
a fellow teacher and allow them to participate in a once in a lifetime
experience!
