What is sport typically like in physical education?
Drills, drills, and more drills followed by a team tournament in a short unit with teams changing frequently, where sport is decontextualized, and students are not truly educated in sport.
What is sport like in after school or recreational settings?
Team affiliation and cohesion, a season where there is room to improve, formal competitions across the season, a culminating event where student goals can be achieved, a festive atmosphere that enhances enjoyment, personal and team records that provide feedback and recognition, and traditions unique to each sport that reflect the nature of the sport.
Why can't physical education provide this more authentic kind of experience to all children and youth whether they be highly skilled or not?
It can through Sport Education. Sport is a natural way to achieve several of our ELRs and NASPE content standards. When sport is taught well it provides developmentally appropriate experiences for all youth through increased playing competence, personal and social growth, and taking responsibility for their own sport experience.
