This month's elementary education page is dedicated to the theme of Celebrating Physical Education and Sport.

It is always important to remember how critical physical education and sport experiences are to our students and the many positive influences that students can have when involved in quality programs.

I have included several articles and some web sites that may be useful to you, your teaching, and your students.

 Campaigning For More Time

The Minister of Learning in Alberta, Canada recently announced that all students were to experience Daily Physical Activity. This initiative, still in the planning stages, recognizes the importance of physical activity in the lives of students and the benefits it can have on healthy living. The initiative is an attempt to answer the growing concerns with the disturbing trends of obesity and lack of fitness in school-aged children.

Although the manner of how this initiative will be implemented has not been established, many physical educationalists are hoping that this will be the beginning of a mandated move to not only daily physical activity but a move toward quality daily physical education programming.

Gaining opportunities to work with students on a daily basis is something that would be beneficial on a number of different fronts. Increased fitness levels, time to expose students to a wide variety of activities, development of physical skill  levels, and an appreciation of an active lifestyle are just a few of the benefits that can be realized from quality daily programming.

Visit the Alberta Government website to see the background to the initiative and keep in touch with the implementation progress. Perhaps share the news with school administrators and see if you can implement such an initiative in your school or district!

 Celebrating Through Bulletin Boards

Why not share some of the news, ideas, and thoughts about all the great things that physical education and sport can promote with school colleagues, students, and parents through a physical education bulletin board?

It is a great space to let every one know of the benefits of a quality daily physical education program and to reinforce healthy lifestyle choices.

Some ideas for your boards:

  • Health issues and facts

  • Fitness tips and activities

  • Family activity ideas to do in the local community in the evenings and at weekends

  • Contact numbers and addresses of local clubs, centers, and organizations that promote and provide sport and physical activity programming

  • Local events/teams that families can go to watch

For more ideas and photographs of different bulletin boards follow the link and visit the PECentral website page that features bulletin boards.

 Some Thoughts...

If we really want to celebrate physical education in our schools and sport programs in our communities, we all need to take a few moments to reflect on the kinds experiences that we are providing students.

We have to critically consider and examine our physical education programs and  what we are teaching our students on a daily basis or reflect on the kinds of sporting activities that we engage our children in.

Physical education programs that do not provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead healthy, active lifestyles will not achieve the accolades that we all hope for. Of even more consequence is that the students can be caught in the trends of inactivity that threaten the youth of today.

Likewise, sport programs that do not foster life time enjoyment and participation in sport, or only cater to a chosen few will also do little for the vast majority of our children.

If we can all take a few minutes and consider our practice perhaps we can become even better in what we do!
