 Editorial

In response to ongoing interest among PE Talkers and NASPE-L list members in online instruction, the PELINKS4U Editorial Team brings you another review (we did it last year too!) of online programs we know are available.

Once again we feature programs focused on physical education and health education. If you know of others please contact us so we can include them in future publications.

As more and more professionals choose to take classes online we would also invite some insight on the pros and cons. Share with us any tips you'd like us to pass on to others.

Last summer at CWU we lost two students from our online program on the first day. It turned out they'd arrived with golf clubs expecting to spend afternoons on the greens! They just weren't prepared for two weeks of intense study.

This quarter the remaining students are taking 6 credits - half a full time graduate student workload. Combine that with a full time job and family and you start to see the challenges.

Online courses are definitely NOT for everyone. Before enrolling be sure YOU are prepared for the commitment.

Sincerely,

PELINKS4U

 West Virginia University

West Virginia University: MS Online in Physical Education

Physical education teachers and coaches are busy people. Physical education teachers and coaches typically teach throughout the day and then coach during the evenings and weekends. Therefore, traditional Masters degree programs that require students to take courses at a certain time and place are often simply impossible for teacher/coaches to fit into their busy schedules. Teachers in most states are required to pursue graduate coursework and/or graduate degrees in order to obtain career advancement and the increases in salary that accompanies professional development.

The School of Physical Education at West Virginia will begin to offer the Master of Science (MS) degree in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) beginning in the summer of 2002. The MS degree program is a 36 credit degree program with both on-site and distance education components.

Participants will spend two weeks each summer in WV completing coursework and return home for the school year and take courses using web-based and internet-based delivery. Web-CT will be the course design system used for the on-line components of the programs.

For complete program information please click here to visit the West Virginia web site, or contact Dr. Lynn Housner.

West Virginia University is located in Morgantown about one hour north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

 Central Washington University

Central Washington University: MS Online - Physical Education and Health Education Emphasis

The Department of PEHLS at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA began its new online option of its MS in PEHLS last summer. This summer it is planning to begin a new cohort of approximately 10-15 students.

This 45 credit program starts with participants taking 2 classes during an intensive two-week orientation session on the Ellensburg campus. This will be the first of two onsite instructional portions to the degree. Following this, orientation participants complete two 3 credit classes online each quarter. Program delivery is through the popular "Blackboard" system of online instruction.

This degree is intended for individuals interested in teaching both physical education and health education, and classes from both areas of emphasis are included in the program. The degree will be completed in a little less than 18 months.

As noted earlier, registration for this program is limited and reviewing of completed applications will begin this month. For more information, visit the CWU web site, or contact Dr. Leo D'Acquisto.

Ellensburg is located next to the Cascade Mountains about 2 hours east of Seattle in Washington State.

Taking Small Steps

I often talk of taking small steps. So let me detail one such approach. If you added or deleted 12 jellybeans to or from your routine diet you would be eliminating 46 calories. Those 46 calories per day translate to almost 5 pounds of more or less fat each year. That is how small positive steps "accumulated over time" make all the difference in the world.

 Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech: Online MS in Physical Education

Virginia Tech started its "electronic" master's degree program in the summer of 1997. Designed for full-time health and physical education teachers who want to complete their degree, yet cannot relocate to Blacksburg. Response to the program has been highly favorable.

Successful participants will begin in the summer of 2003 and graduate at the end of spring semester in 2005. A unique aspect of this masters degree program is its focus on "project based learning." Participants use their own programs to complete a series of related action research projects designed to encourage a deeper understanding of effective teaching and program effectiveness.

Participants are required to spend two weeks in Blacksburg the first summer, and two more weeks in the second and final summer. Participants complete course assignments, and maintain connection with classmates and professors through e-mail and access to a program Internet site.

For complete program information please click here to visit Virginia Tech's web site, or contact Dr. George Graham.

Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia.

PE Mailing Lists and PE Forums

Physical Education E-Mailing Lists and the PE Forum

If you are interested in technology (hence reading this page) you are probably also signed up on one or both of the two major PE listservs. In case not, check out the NASPE-L and PE-Talk lists. Click here for contact information. Both of these lists are mailed on a regular base, and connect you with 1000s of colleagues with whom you can share information.

If you are already a listserv regular, we would like to encourage you to visit the PE Forum. This is a bulletin board onto which you can post and read messages. The nice thing about bulletin boards is that you have complete control over your reading. If you are a technology user you already know how email can become overwhelming.

Bulletin boards are great locations for addressing issues that might be of interest to only one group of teachers. They allow us to post information that becomes permanent and can be revisited in the future.

Another nice feature about the PE Forum is that if you choose to register, you can request to be notified by email when new postings are made to sections of personal interest to you. For example, if you are only interested in Elementary Physical Education, you will be informed when new postings are made to this section, but not to the other sections.

Please visit the PE Forum. It is still in the early stages of design so we would appreciate your feedback. If you are interested in becoming a moderator of one of the sections, please let us know that also. Become a participant on issues that are important to you!

Finally, let your colleagues know about the PE Forum so that the listservs can be used for newsworthy items of interest to everyone.
