CONTRACTED
PHYS ED: In my high school they had this "contracted
phys-ed" class and basically it was the student was involved
in a sports team at the high school and all they had to do was document
all of their practices and games, and then had to get it signed
by the coach of whatever sport it was. Once they got the documents
filled out they took it to a phys ed teacher, and they approved
it for a physical education credit, but the student actually didnt
have to be in a phys ed class. Does anyone have opinions on this
if it is a good idea or even acceptable? Please share in the forum.

DON'T
PRACTICE - DON'T TEACH!: Ok, we all have heard the
saying "Practice what you preach", so why is health and
physical education any different? If you cannot pass the various
fitness tests, how can you tell your students to run more and do
more pull-ups. Being a healthy and active role model should be part
of this job, and I feel students look at that more than what you
are teaching in class. So, what do you think? Should health and
PE teachers have some sort of fitness test to become certified in
health and PE? Please share in the forum.

AFTER
SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Does after school programs work?
Are there students interested in them? What age group would work
best? I can see high school not working because students just want
to leave. Has anyone set up an after school program? Please share
in the forum.

SCHOOL
ATHLETICS AND PE PARTICIPATION: There are a lot
of student athletes that complain about taking Physical Education
classes. The argument that most propose is that they get enough
physical activity through sports practices and games. I believe
that student athletes should be required to take PE classes just
like the rest of the student body. My high school made exceptions
for athletes when they had games and such. Should school athletics
have an affect on PE participation in schools? Please share in the
forum.

PICKING
TEAMS IN PE CLASS: When choosing teams in Physical
Education classes, what is the most easiest and fair way to go about
it? I'm not an advocate for choosing captains because I always feel
bad for the last few people to get picked. If anyone has a more
productive way of picking teams, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you! Please share in the forum.

MUSIC
IN PE: I seen an earlier post regarding this topic,
but wanted to get some more input. Music really keeps my Junior
High students moving. Even if they are not fully participating in
the activity they are moving, dancing to the music. I'm looking
to update my music selection, any suggestions for appropriate music,
or songs that are upbeat and junior high students would enjoy. Please
share in the forum.

FIELD
DAY IDEAS...AND MORE!: Ah, field day! I thought
I'd share some ideas in the hope that others will contribute theirs
as well. These will work primarily for elementary and middle school.
1. Wrap the mummy -
Divide students into several groups. Each group chooses one student
to be a mummy. Others line up 50 feet away from mummy. On the
whistle, students take turns running down and wrapping one body
part of the mummy with toilet paper. Students take turns until
all parts or covered or a time limit runs out. Teachers can then
judge mummies based on neatness, thoroughness of coverage or other
criteria.
2. Sponge Race - You'll need two buckets,
a sponge and water for this. Fill up one bucket with water. Line
up students about 1-2 feet apart in a line with other bucket at
the end of the line. On the whistle, the first student in line
dunks the sponge in the water and then passes it backwards over
his/her head. Repeat to end of line and squeeze remaining water
from sponge into bucket. Winner is determined by how quickly first
bucket is emptied OR who has the most water in the bucket at the
end. Great on a hot day. Everyone gets drenched! Find out more.

ADAPTED
PE: I am working with adapted children with autism
and we have been teaching different lessons for them every week.
Some topics included dance, soccer, scooters, etc.. The students
seem uninterested or hard to keep on track. Do you have any suggestions
of fun activities or lesson that interests autistic students? Please
share in the forum.
