Among high school students, 20 percent carried a weapon in the last 30 days; 35 percent smoke cigarettes; 24 percent considered suicide in the last year; and 75 percent do not go to physical education class daily.

PE Central has posted a NEW look K-2 Menu Page on the PEC web site. You are invited to test this new idea then give comments and suggestions for improvements via an online voting form.

Daily participation in high school physical education classes dropped from 42 percent in 1991 to 27 percent in 1997.

Animated Healthy Heart Site

American School Health Association
At the American School Health Association web site, you can order publications related to school nurse and health services, education and health, and HIV/AIDS, as well as special issues of the *Journal of School Health*. Among the publications are a guide to coordinated school health programs, an advocacy kit for reducing pregnancy and the spread of HIV, and *Healthy Students 2000: An Agenda for Continuous Improvement in America's Schools*.

Flying Fitness Flamingo Lands in Malta!
Whoever receives the "Flying Fitness Flamingo" records arrival information, takes a picture of their school with the flamingo, shares some information about their school and any PE activity they do, then sends it onto another state. This project involves geography, writing, reading, and math skills at all grade levels.

OLYMPHILEX 2000, to be held in Sydney during the Olympic Games is the seventh event of its kind. OLYMPHILEX is an exhibition of Olympic stamps, coins and memorabilia that was created by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch.

The IOC Working Group on Women and Sport met in Paris before the opening of the 2nd World Conference on Women and Sport which was held March 6-8, 2000.

Surgeon General Keynotes at AAHPERD
If you plan to attend AAHPERD don't miss David Satcher the US Surgeon General's keynote address on the importance of physical activity and physical education in the new millennium at the NASPE General Session on Wednesday, March 22, 3:30 p.m. in the Orlando Convention Center. Dr. Satcher will unveil the Healthy People 2010 Objectives set forth by the Office of Disease Promotion and Prevention of the US Health and Human Services Department.
