Post Convention Greetings & pelinks4u Articles Review

Despite the unanticipated complications of airline flight cancellations and hotel construction delays, the 2008 AAHPERD National Convention brought together several thousand allied health professionals in Forth Worth. With dozens of sessions offered simultaneously, the toughest part of the week long event was choosing between topics and presenters.

Below, with our articles for this month, are my personal reflections on some of the sessions I was able to attend. Another favorite activity of most convention goers was the chance to see the latest equipment, books, services, educational opportunities, and much more displayed by several hundred exhibitors. A special thanks to those of you who took time to visit the pelinks4u booth.

If you are a regular pelinks4u reader you'll know that we changed our format this year. One of our goals was to reduce the quantity of the information we offered each month (too overwhelming for many), and increase the quality of the articles. This month we have some excellent articles written especially for pelinks4u. I do encourage you to take a look at them, and if any stir responses, then please write to either the author or me.

When I encourage people to contribute something to pelinks4u I'm always surprised at their reluctance. It's not laziness, but rather a belief that they don't have much that would interest others. On the contrary, I'm firmly convinced that YOU and everyone else have so much to contribute. If you teach, there's something that you do that we can learn from. You don't need to be a researcher or write a lengthy piece full of professional references. Many of you have years of experience, and an opinion that deserves to be shared. It's through sharing and debating ideas that we move forward, so please - as we get close to the end of this academic year - set a goal to share something with your professional colleagues on pelinks4u during the next year.

For this month, please spend some time looking at what our volunteer editors have contributed. Darren Dale suggests that "PE Cannot Make Children Thin." See if you agree with his reasoning. Other stories celebrate technological advancements and their impact on PE over the past few years; a new approach to teaching physical education taking place in Luxembourg; the game of Sepak Takraw from the Philippines; strategies to improve cooperation in elementary school physical education; ways for coaches to promote health related fitness; and a description of the use and value of adventure and experiential education.

Finally, thanks to those of you who participated in the election of the new NASPE Board Members. Full details of the election can be found on the NASPE web site.

title: Backward Olympics

Directions: Find a partner. On the first rotation, partner #1 will perform each of the ten events. Partner #2 will be the recorder. Some of the tasks are recorded by the time, while others are recorded in distance. Each partner is given two trials per station. Only your best score is recorded. On the second round, partners switch roles. Measure everything from the taped START/FINISH line.

  1. Backward Bowl: Roll a ball between your legs toward a single pin placed 20-30 feet away. How many trials does it take to knock over the pin?
  2. Backward Standing Long Jump: Place heels on the start line, bend arms and jump backward. Use a yardstick to measure inches traveled. Mark the distance from the line to where the toes land.
  3. Backward Walk on Balance Beam: Can you walk the beam end to end without stepping off?
  4. Backward Basketball Dribble: How long does it take to dribble between eight cones down and back in a backward direction?
  5. Backward Rope Jumps (60 seconds): How many total jumps can you perform in 60 seconds?
  6. Backward Soccer Dribble: How long does it take to dribble a ball backward through the line of eight cones?
  7. Backward Ladder Run: How quickly can you run backward across the ladder stepping inside each space?
  8. Backward Speed Rolls: How quickly can you roll backward 10 feet?
  9. Backward Scooter Race: How long does it take to move your scooter backward from the start to finish line 50 feet away? Push with feet from a sitting position.
  10. Medicine Ball Throw: Throw the ball backward for a distance. Make sure the area is clear.
